Story behind the Teddy Bear🧸

The Teddy Bear is named after the 26th President of USA, Theodore Roosevelt.

Theodore Roosevelt

When Roosevelt became the President in 1901, lot of people affectionately called him Teddy. Actually it was his first wife used to call him Teddy. After her death, he did not want anyone to call him Teddy again and so he asked his fans to call him TR instead. But they kept him calling Teddy again even after his request.

One day in 1902, the Mississippi governor invited him for bear hunting. At that time, hunting was a favorite pastime of the wealthy. Roosevelt accepted the invitation and joined the hunting team in the forest.

There was a helper to show them the way through the trees and bushes. Even after long hours in the forest, the team couldn't spot any bear. Thinking that the President would be angry, the helper decided to catch a bear at any cost and he caught a bear with the help of hound dogs and tied it to a tree for the president to shoot down. But the President did not shoot that bear and he became so angry that he scolded the team for the " unsportsmanlike" deed.

The story of Roosvelt's love for animals spread like wildfire. He had a bunch of pet animals, including a hyena, in the White House. So people made up many stories about his interactions with animals and soon he became kind of a hero who stood up for animals.

Now the idea of Teddy Bear starts here...It is Rose and Morris Michtom- the couple who owned a candy shop in Brooklyn. They had an idea. Rose cut some clothes and stitched them to look like a bear, and glued two buttons as it's eyes.

Then, they hung it on the shop's door with a name tag-Teddy's bear. Within minutes people rushed to the store and many wanted to buy the new doll! What an Idea😀, isn't it? The couple had not thought that their doll would become a super hit overnight. They sought permission from the White House to use the President's name for their doll. The President did not disappoint the couple and the sale of the bear doll soared high.

The couple closed down their candy shop and started a toy company named Ideal! Thus started the journey of very famous and adorable doll- Teddy Bear🧸.
